148  La subiduria de los muertos  segun Carmelita Inez
(the wisdom of the dead according to Camelita Inez)

I am a huge fan of dia de los muertos, so here is yet another piece honoring that wonderful cultural celebration .  I cut  “Carmelita” from vintage wool that I hand dyed, in the manner of  papel picado, the Mexican art of papercutting. She is appliquéd onto vintage purple velvet, also appliquéd with antique lace flowers, hand painted and hand dyed.. I used a vintage striped taffeta at the top, and at the bottom a Victorian silk embroidered piano shawl, which I hand dyed bright yellow, and embellished with silver milagros. The tassel, button, and beaded sequined trim at the bottom are from a Victorian morning cape. Also used- Victorian moiré ribbon, reproduction trim, and antique & vintage beads.
Techniques
Quilting, embrodidery, beading, appliqué, hand dyed fabric.  All work done by hand.
